The feature film A Complete Unknown is a biographical portrayal of one of the most iconic singers of our time, Bob Dylan (b. 1941), who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016.
The lead role as the famous singer is played by Timothée Chalamet (b. 1995), who was previously seen in Lady Bird (2017) alongside Saoirse Ronan, who stars in The Outrun.
We are in New York in the early 1960s, when a young and completely unknown 19-year-old from Minnesota arrives in West Village. With his guitar in hand, he sings not only innovative but also revolutionary songs that he has written and composed himself. Soon, he changes the landscape of contemporary music across the country.
During these years, he forms connections with other singers and poets, but he is reluctant to be categorized, as everything is discussed and handled as part of a folk movement. He wants to walk out of step, as our Kári P. would say, and that has consequences worldwide.
Timothée Chalamet both acts and sings as Bob Dylan in this film, directed by James Mangold. The screenplay was co-written by Mangold, Jay Cocks, and Elijah Wald. Mangold previously directed Walk the Line (2005) about Johnny Cash and Girl, Interrupted (1999), which was based on the memoir of Susan Kaysen, who lived in Skopun and was the daughter of Carl Kaysen, a speechwriter for President Kennedy.
