The German concert that same year became the double best-selling ECM record The Köln Concert, recorded at the city’s opera house. Critics agree that the album is one of the most significant of its kind.

American jazz critic Tom Hull remarked, referring to Keith Jarrett, that this concert release ‘cemented his reputation as the top pianist of his generation.’

In 2011, the young Vera Brandes recounted to the BBC how difficult it had been to organize the concert. The role of Manfred Eicher, who founded the legendary ECM label and also shaped its distinctive album-cover aesthetic, is played by Alexander Sheer.
