What to do on a rainy day
A local journalist’s tips to a cozy rainy day in Tórshavn.
December 5th, 2023
Ok, let’s be honest here. The weather in Tórshavn is not always great. These are not the Canary Islands – these are the Faroe Islands and it does rain and the weather at times can be downright inclement. But that’s part of the charm of a trip to the Faroes – you never quite know what the weather’s going to do and if it’s foul outside, it’s best just to embrace the weather and work with it.
Best of all is to sit in a snug café, perhaps with a good book, your phone or a friend and treat yourself to a slice of cake and a cup of excellent coffee. Somehow, the rain pouring down the windowpanes doesn’t seem so bad after all!
Next, head into town for a bit of retail therapy and track down that Faroese sweater you’ve always promised yourself. Or maybe learn to knit one yourself? Book a class here.
You could also visit the art gallery or national museum to brush up on some art or history—or both.
Alternatively, spending a rainy afternoon in the swimming pool and steaming in the town sauna is a great idea. You could also indulge in some self-care with a relaxing spa treatment. Afterward, enjoy a cup of afternoon tea in one of our many cafés and plan your day for tomorrow, when the sun will most definitely be shining!
Visit our cafés
When the rain’s trickling down the windowpanes, what better to do than open a good book and enjoy a good cup of coffee as you turn the pages? Simply stroll down to Vaglið square in the town centre and you’ll come across the H.N.J. bookstore – known locally as “the old bookstore” and in our humble opinion one of the cutest bookshops anywhere in the world.
Settle down in one of the many nearby cafés with a freshly brewed coffee or organic tea, treat yourself to a homemade cake or sandwich, and let the story begin.

Enjoy a warm, homecooked meal
The heimablídni (directly translates to home hospitality) provides an authentic Faroese experience. This supper club invites visitors to dine with a local family or individual. Guests can enjoy the freshest lamb and fish, and, if they wish, traditional whale meat, all paired with rhubarb-flavored desserts. As you eat, you’ll hear fascinating tales about life on the islands. It’s more than just a meal; it’s an insight into the Faroese lifestyle and a chance to explore the region’s rich culture.

Embrace the rain and go hiking
A visit to the often rainy Faroe Islands requires the right clothing. Instead of letting the weather deter you, welcome the opportunity to experience nature in a unique and refreshing way. The rain can help you find your way to mindfulness, create a soothing soundtrack, and offer a sense of tranquility and solitude on the trails. So, put on your rain gear, step outside, and enjoy the invigorating freshness of a rainy day.
