Developing Tourism
Visit Tórshavn:
Developing sustainable tourism and co-creating unforgettable experiences
Visit Tórshavn promotes and develops tourism in the municipality of Tórshavn.
We continually work to develop sustainable tourism in the capital area, in collaboration with both public and private stakeholders.
We collaborate on regional, national and international projects with local and international partners.
We host various networking events; we hold open-forum meetings with local people; we take part in international and national tourism projects; we work with improving wayfinding in our region; we produce informative brochures and signage, and we are continuously working towards tourism where citizens and visitors mutually respect each other.
About us
Positioned centrally in Tórshavn, our headquarters and information center cater to the needs of countless annual visitors, acting as a pivotal point for guidance on what to do whilst in the Faroe Islands, whist simultanously developing our destination.
Towards a more regenerative & sustainable tourism development
Our goal is for tourism to become regenerative, meaning that tourism somehow adds value to the lives of locals. We always base our work on the three pillars of sustainability – environmental, economic & social.

Co-creation and local experiences
Visit Tórshavn and Hugskotið (the municipal House of Entrepreneurs) have collaborated for years in regards to an annual accelerator programme called “Nýskapan í Ferðavinnuni” or “Innovation in Tourism”.
The programme aims to help accelerate people and businesses who are either considering creating a tourism product, or who want to accelerate their product. The programme consists of a combination of tailormade workshops and mentoring within fields of relevance for the participants. Until now, in 2024, a total of 39 projects have participated in the programme, and most of them are still going strong.
Visit Tórshavn collaborates with local businesses and organizations to co-create and develop experiences, ranging from guided tours of historical landmarks to culinary adventures showcasing Faroese cuisine.
Closed For Maintenance
One way of working sustainably & regeneratively with tourism, is the annual Closed For Maintenance initiative, in which we have participated as a local partner every year since it started. In this initiative, we collaborate closely with local landowners, to help both repair and rebuild village paths and other areas in need of our assistance. We do the work by the help of both international and local voluntourists.
If you want to join the Closed For Maintenance initiative, you can apply via Visit Faroe Islands – please note that we always have far more applications than available spots, therefore you are not guaranteed a spot – but we encourage you to apply until you succeed. We cannot wait to have you on our team!
Nordic Regenerative Tourism
Visit Tórshavn is also a proud partner of the NorReg-project – Nordic Regenerative Tourism, and are happy to announce, that the project has been funded for one more year, until the summer of 2025.
In NorReg we work both with sharing knowledge about what regenerative tourism means, with establishing a local regenerative network in Tórshavn, and on a Citizen Science project about local food. Another exciting project is underway, as part of the extended NorReg project – more information will follow.
Meetings & Events
In the meetings industry, Visit Tórshavn has a longstanding MICE-partnership with Visit Faroe Islands and the municipality of Tórshavn.
