Presentation and Discussion: The Situation of the Sámi – Human Rights Violations and Climate Justice
Aili Keskitalo is a Sámi from northern Norway. She currently works for Amnesty Norway as an advisor on indigenous rights and climate justice, and she has also served as a Sámi politician and President of the Sámi Parliament in Norway. We are fortunate that Aili is visiting the Faroe Islands to help us understand the injustices Sámi people have historically faced, as well as some of the human rights violations Sámi experience today. To understand these violations, Aili will also guide us through Sámi culture and indigenous rights.
Perlan, 16:00 – Amnesty Føroyar, Frítt Val, and Kvinnufelagið
Workshop: Abortion Rights
These associations are hosting a workshop now that the proposed updated abortion law is being presented to the Faroese Parliament again. We invite everyone who supports a modernized abortion law and wants to contribute to the effort to join the workshop and help plan the work ahead. Maybe you’ve felt that a certain perspective has been missing in the discussions, have an idea for a campaign, or simply want to take part in the fight.
Reinsaríið, 16:00 – Amnesty Føroyar & Føroyar Lesa
Book Talk: Human Rights in Dreymsótt and Toran Walks
Author Rakel Helmsdal highlights human rights in two of her latest books. In the dystopian novel Dreymsótt, we explore a surveillance society marked by persecution, fear, and harshness. In the children’s book Toran Walks, her distinctive illustrations focus on refugees and war. The books feature individuals who feel lonely and alienated, even under the same roof. How can people come closer across language, religion, beliefs, and skin color? Rakel Helmsdal and Marna Jacobsen will discuss these questions.
Perlan, 18:00 – Red Cross
On the Moves: Stories of Displacement
This interactive session explores the complex realities of forced migration, highlighting the human rights at stake and the resilience of displaced people, while creating space for dialogue, empathy, and reflection on displacement as both a global challenge and a local experience.
Reinsaríið, 19:00 – Amnesty Føroyar & LGBT+ Føroyar
Soda Talk: Legal Gender Change
In most countries, citizens receive birth certificates, ID numbers, or other official documents that determine their gender. This assigned gender follows us throughout life and strongly influences how we are classified and treated. This can be particularly problematic for non-binary people, whose identity does not align with the assigned gender. In collaboration with LGBT+ Føroyar, this session will shed light on these issues and include contributions from a non-binary person and a psychologist on the challenges and consequences when gender identity and legal gender do not match.
