Non-fiction in Faroese – Who Takes Responsibility?

Where: Skálin
Duration: 45 min.

What happens when there are no non-fiction books about your own society – in your own language?

In this panel discussion, we explore the need for non-fiction about Faroese society, written in Faroese.
Who really owns knowledge if it doesn’t exist in one’s mother tongue?

Taking as a starting point the ongoing effort to strengthen Faroese non-fiction, the panel discusses both the challenges and opportunities involved in creating, publishing, and sharing new knowledge – in Faroese and about Faroese realities.

Why is this important for teachers, journalists, politicians, and others who shape public debate? And what is lost when the language itself falls short?

A timely conversation about language, power, and access to knowledge – in an era when small languages are fighting for visibility and relevance.

For twenty years, Fróðskapur – the University Press of the Faroe Islands – has published nearly 100 books, presenting research in and about the Faroe Islands. Many of these are in Faroese, while others are in other Nordic languages or in English. In the past two years, most of the books have been digitized and made freely available online.

The press has also granted Máltøknidepilin (the Centre for Language Technology) permission to use these texts in its work.

This event is based on Fróðskapur’s mission: to publish high-quality academic literature about Faroese topics, written in Faroese.
