Digger (Alejandro G. Iñárritu UK, Mexico, and USA 2026 128 min)

After classics such as John Ford and Joseph L. Mankiewicz, Iñárritu became the third director to win the Academy Award for Best Director in consecutive years, with Birdman (2014) and The Revenant (2015).

Iñárritu excels at portraying the human condition, and this latest film, Digger, has been praised by critics as a comedy that seeks to depict a tragic situation brought about by nothing other than humanity’s own ambitions.

Academy Award winner and action star Tom Cruise is almost unrecognisable in the leading role as the world’s most powerful and influential man, Digger Rockwell, a Texan. Determined and fearless, he has set himself the task of proving that he alone can save humankind before the disaster that he himself has created and set in motion destroys everything.

In addition to Tom Cruise, the film features an impressive ensemble of Academy Award winners and nominees from several countries, including Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Robert John Burke, Emma D’Arcy, Burn Gorman and Sophie Wilde.

The cinematography is by the Mexican cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki Morgenstern (b. 1964), the only person in film history to win the Academy Award for Best Cinematography three years in a row, including for The Revenant, where he worked exclusively with natural daylight.

The screenplay for the new film, Digger, was written by director Iñárritu together with Academy Award winners Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone and Sabina Berman.
