Palestine ’36 (Annemarie Jacir 2025 119 min)

In this historical drama, she takes us back to the year 1936. As settlements throughout the territory of British-controlled Palestine rise up against colonial rule, Yusuf tries to find a meaningful path and a place for himself between his rural home and the distant allure of life in Jerusalem. But it is impossible to escape history and its course.

Large numbers of Jewish immigrants are fleeing antisemitism in Europe, while the Palestinian people unite in the largest and longest uprising against British rule, which has lasted for 30 years. The British Empire and the entire region are soon to come under fire.

The leading roles are played by Hiam Abbass, Kamel El Basha, and Jeremy Irons. “Oscar-worthy Palestinian narratives,” wrote the reviewer for The New York Times.

The film is an international production in Arabic and English, with Denmark, Sweden, and Norway also involved in its production.
