Stongin

The northern tip of Nólsoy is called Stongin. The name refers to the pole, which, with a barrel at the top, served as a beacon. Here, on the northern part of the island—74 meters above sea level—the beacon was built in 1849 as a navigation aid for ships entering Tórshavn.

Today, the large circular stone foundation that supported the pole still stands. The year 1849 is carved into a stone on the side facing the sea.
