Launched in the summer of 2023 and running until 2026, the project aims to promote and support cycling tourism across the Faroe Islands, while also strengthening small businesses connected to biking and sustainable travel.

The film above was created in collaboration with the Faroese Council for Traffic Safety, Visit Faroe Islands, and Visit Tórshavn, with support from Interreg.

Its main goal? To show that cycling in the Faroe Islands is not only possible – it’s an unforgettable experience. The film also shares practical tips on how to share the road safely, what to bring, and when the best times are to ride.

Can i cycle off-road

You must obtain a permit from the local farmer before you can cycle off-road. The best way to preserve and respect nature and the farmer is to cycle off-road with a local guide who knows the area. Then you get a suitable and unique challenge.
RENT A BIKE offers private guided off-road tours all year round.
Nature is the basis for well-being, health and business in the Faroe Islands and must be respected.

How should i dress for the trip?

Summers is cool with an average temperature of 13°C, and winters is mild, with an average temperature of 3°C. We recommend that you put on 3 layers of clothing, where the outer layer is wind and waterproof. The weather can often change within a day. Therefore, it is good to have several layers on.

Is it allowed to bike true tunnels and subsea tunnels ?

You can bike through 19 road tunnels and 2 subsea tunnels across the Faroe Islands.

Please note that cycling is not permitted in the new Eysturoy and Sandoy subsea tunnels. However, it is allowed in the Norðoy and Vágar subsea tunnels. While cycling through these older subsea tunnels is technically permitted, we strongly advise against it due to safety concerns.
Most of the 19 tunnels are “low-cost” tunnels (similar to Norway and Island).
You should always wear a helmet, have good lights, blinking lights and a reflective vest on while biking through a tunnel. You can bring your own lights and put them on, as an extra light, when cycling trough tunnels. There is no tunnel fee for the bicycle.

Some tunnels are 2 lanes, others are 1 lanes.

Please notice that “Kollfjarðartunnelin” is heavily trafficked. The tunnels on the islands Kunoy and Kalsoy are narrow, dark and low trafficked.

You can bike on the old roads and avoided going through these tunnels: “Kollafjarðartunnilin”, “Leynatunnilin”, “Norðskálatunnilin”,”Leirvíkstunnilin”, “Sumbiartunnilin” and “Dalstunnilin”.
