A discussion of the proposed amendments to the abortion law and their implications
Only a few months after the new abortion law came into force, a proposal has now been put forward to introduce several new requirements for girls and women who seek an abortion. Among other things, the proposal would require women seeking an abortion to undergo mandatory counselling, observe a five-day waiting period before the procedure, and, in all cases except rape, incest, and similar circumstances, obtain parental consent if they are under the age of 18.
Amnesty Føroyar, Frítt Val, and Kvinnufelagið oppose the introduction of such barriers, which restrict the bodily autonomy of girls and women. Therefore, our organizations are hosting an event on Sunday, 18 October at 4:00 PM, where we will discuss the proposed amendments. In addition to a panel discussion on the proposal, the programme will also include a reading.
PANEL DISCUSSION
Turið Maria Jóhansdóttir (Amnesty Føroyar) will be joined by Katrina Kallsberg (specialist in gynaecology), Drós Ákadóttir (psychologist), and Ingilín D. Strøm (Amnesty Føroyar) to discuss the proposed amendments and their potential consequences.
READING
There will also be a reading during the event. The names of the readers will be announced later.
WHAT CAN WE DO NOW?
There will also be an opportunity to discuss how we can influence the situation and respond to the proposed changes.
We hope to see many of you at The Folk High School (Háskúlin) on Sunday at 4:00 PM.
