Calle Málaga (Maryam Touzani, Marocco 2025 116 min)

Among her many awards, it is worth mentioning that Carmen Maura won the Best Actress Award at the Venice Film Festival in 1988 for her leading role in the film that Filmsfelagið screened at the Municipal Theatre (Sjónleikarhúsið) under the title »Kvinnur á áfalstrom« (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown). In 2006, she also shared the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival for the ensemble female cast of Volver, which we have likewise screened.

The cinematographer is Virginie Surdej, who is well known in the Faroe Islands.

In Calle Málaga, María lives in the Spanish quarter of Tangier, the Moroccan tourist paradise. For some time, her daughter Clara (Marta Etura) has been announcing that she is coming for a visit. When she finally arrives, however, it is to persuade her mother to sell the apartment. Clara is now single, and following her divorce she has fallen into financial hardship. But María, who is deeply rooted in the neighbourhood and enjoys a close relationship with all her neighbours, has no intention of moving, whatever the cost.

This film was directed by the multiple award-winning Moroccan filmmaker Maryam Touzani (b. 1980), a native of Tangier, and produced in collaboration with Nabil Ayouch of Casablanca. Their partnership was also behind The Blue Caftan (2022), which was photographed by the Belgian cinematographer Virginie Surdej. The same is true of this film, which has received excellent reviews. Virginie Surdej is known in the Faroe Islands because she is the regular cinematographer for Sakaris Stórá.
