Ethical Evening: Democracy

Democracy is under pressure, and there is a growing concern in the Western world. This concern partly stems from the perception that our willingness—or ability—to engage in civil discourse seems to be steadily decreasing. This is especially evident when disagreements arise over ethical issues.

This evening, we will learn more about democracy and what it requires of us to live together despite disagreements.

Jógvan D. Hansen, a philosophy teacher, will reflect on the topic based on the book “What is Democracy” by Hal Koch. Published in 1945, the book is shaped by the war and the German occupation of Denmark, during which democracy was suspended. Its discussion of the conditions for democracy and the idea of democracy as a way of life, where dialogue is central, remains highly relevant today.

Torkil Tórgarð, the new principal of the Faroese Folk High School, will discuss the folk high school movement, which emerged around the introduction of the Danish constitution and was closely linked to the development of modern democracy in Denmark. The movement can be understood as a democratic project, emphasizing democratic education and the relationship between citizens and society. In connection with the evening dinner, students at the folk high school have worked on the theme of “democracy”, and their paintings will also be displayed during the event.

Everyone is warmly welcome.
