Everyday Life in the Third Reich is based on the original play Furcht und Elend des Dritten Reiches by the German playwright Bertolt Brecht.
The play is a collection of short scenes about different people in different situations. What they have in common is that they live in a society marked by war and violence.
Brecht fled from Germany and wrote Furcht und Elend des Dritten Reiches while in exile in Denmark from 1933 to around 1938. The historical backdrop of the play is the Nazi takeover of Germany in 1933 and the oppression and violence that followed.
The scenes depict the lives of people in a country where a dictator, through repression and brutality, pursues his dream of a Third Reich.
The play explores how people behave when living under an inhuman dictatorship, such as the Nazi regime, but with themes that resonate under any form of totalitarian oppression.
