Faroese Language History – Volume 1: The Beginning

Where: Skálin
Duration: 45 min

Welcome to the launch of a unique book series: Føroysk málsøga – the first major work on the history of the Faroese language! In five volumes, linguists from different countries explore how Faroese has developed through time and across regions.

Now we present Volume 1: Byrjanin (The Beginning), which examines the Faroese language from its origins – where it came from, which languages it is related to, how language awareness emerged, and what people think about the language today.

This is the beginning of a larger work that encompasses both internal and external language change, dialects, language ideology, and societal developments.
How did Faroese come to be?
What shapes the language today?
And what does the language tell us about ourselves as a society?

The upcoming volumes include Innari broytingar (Internal Changes), Variatión og málamót (Variation and Language Contact), and Ytri broytingar (External Changes), as well as a fifth volume with a glossary of terms.

Join us as the researchers behind the project share discoveries and stories from the rich and complex history of the Faroese language.
The event features scholarly presentations and conversations with the team behind the project.
This will be an occasion for everyone who values cultural heritage and identity – a rare opportunity to delve into the language that has shaped – and continues to shape – the Faroe Islands.
