Trio Ciocaia (IT)
Ciocaia was named after the “strikes” or small movements his fingers made on the instrument, and he was one of the last great Emilian piva players in the Parma Apennines in Italy.

Trio Ciocaia has adopted this name to honour the old rural tradition and uses the Emilian piva, which belongs to the large family of bagpipes, to reconnect with this unique musical culture.

The repertoire combines songs and dances from folk tradition with fragments of 17th-century classical music – a time when, it is said, the true musical heritage and culture were at their height.

Marco Mainini: vocals, Emilian piva, fife
Ferdinando Gatti: Emilian piva, guitar, vocals
Fabio Bonvicini: accordion, Emilian piva, vocals

Alterne (DK/EE/BE)
With contemporary songwriting, the dreamlike folk trio Alterne blurs the boundaries between pop, folk, and ambient. The group consists of Danish singer Ida Marie Jessen, Belgian violinist Oscar Beerten, and Estonian accordion player Maimu Jõgeda. Together, they create an enchanting and dreamlike soundscape.

Alterne has performed at festivals such as FolkBaltica (DK), Lõikuspidu (EST), Boglárt (HU), Bijloke (BE), and Merode (BE), captivating audiences across Europe.

Their debut album was released in 2024 on GO’ Danish Folk Music and has received strong international acclaim. Eric Van Domburg Scipio from Heavenmagazine.nl has written, among other things: “Jessen’s vocals and songs are world-class, especially combined with the trio’s beautiful arrangements. 2024 is unlikely to bring much more wonderful folk music than this.”
