Freedom to believe?
To believe what we wish is a human right enshrined in our constitution and in the international human rights conventions that the Faroe Islands have committed to uphold.
Much is currently being discussed and said about belief in Faroese society. The tone is marked by strong opinions, fear, and polarisation. That is why we believe there is a need for a conversation about what belief means to us personally – but also what it means for our society, when the debate touches on democratic values, personal freedom, and human rights.
PROGRAMME:
- Shakeel Jamil, Vice-Chair of Amnesty Faroe Islands — Welcome and introduction to human rights and freedom of religion
- Sigri M. Gaïni, PhD, Lecturer in Science Studies, Philosophy of Life, and Ethics — Is democracy possible without freedom of religion?
- Voices from various faith communities — Participants share what their personal faith means to them and the role it plays in their lives. Óluvá Zacariassen moderates.
The initiative has been organised by the working group on freedom of religion — staffed by volunteer enthusiasts. At the event, the organisers will present the working group and how you can become a part of it.
