On Gazes, Greenland Painters, and Traveling Artists

Where: Dansistovan
Duration: 120 min.

In our summer exhibition You Gaze On Me – As I Gaze Upon You we present works by female artists who have traveled in Greenland, depicting everyday scenes and encounters between people. But how did the male artists see Greenland? What kind of image did they paint of the country?

The term Greenland Painters is especially used to describe a group of Danish artists who, from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s, traveled to Greenland to paint and document the land and its people.

Laila Lund Altinbas, one of the curators behind the summer exhibition, talks with art historian Anna Maria Dam Ziska about the gaze of the Greenland Painters: how it was shaped by the colonial mindset of the time, how it ties into the development of European nation-states — and how these ideas still influence perceptions of Greenland today.

Following the conversation, Laila Lund Altinbas will give a guided tour of the exhibition.
