Taxi Driver (Martin Scorsese USA 1976 114 min)

In this story by Paul Schrader (b. 1946), who often writes about isolated and inwardly troubled men, Travis drives into every corner of the city, including the places no one else wants to go.

With strong spiritual undertones, a desire emerges to rise above the filth and, alone, cleanse the city of the night so that it can once again withstand the light of day and become a temple once more.

To frame this existential urban tale between dream and reality, we hear the nervous jazz score of Bernard Herrmann (1911–1975) against a backdrop of neon signs and underground steam, where the yellow taxi moves through the shadows, darkly stained, like a wild animal that has emerged from the jungle at night and, in the city, become one with its driver.
