The Dream of a Place – Memory, Mood and Longing

Theme and Inspiration for the Exhibition

We all have places we return to in our minds. Places we remember through particular moods, colours, light and forms. Places that have left their mark on us, and that we may long to rediscover.

After many years of travelling to and staying in the Faroe Islands, I have been filled with strong sensory impressions from this landscape. These are experiences that are often difficult to hold on to in words, but which insist on finding their way into my paintings.

I am drawn to the spaces within the landscape, the forms and colours of nature, and to the moment when what we see is transformed into something remembered and dreamt of. My visual language moves between the recognisable and the abstract, between the tangible place and the inner image we carry of it.

The paintings are therefore not literal representations of particular places, but rather expressions of sensory memory, moods and longing.

The dream of a place is the dream of finding our way back to something we may never be able to fully hold on to.
