A magical yet realistic story, not about the Moomins, but about the girl Sophia and her grandmother, here played by Glenn Close, during a summer on a small, uninhabited island in the Finnish archipelago.
The Summer Book is an intimate chamber piece which, in the shadow of the mother’s recent death, portrays three generations: the child Sophia (Emily Matthews), the father (Anders Danielsen Lie), and the grandmother (Glenn Close). Between Sophia and her grandmother, a rare and heartfelt friendship blossoms. At the same time, life on the island is ruled by the ever-changing weather.
The Icelandic actor Ingvar Sigurdsson also appears in this English-spoken film.
A Swedish reviewer writes: “Sommarboken is a quiet and sea-scented adaptation of Tove Jansson’s beloved novel.”
Filmsfelagið has previously shown Zaida Bergroth’s acclaimed biographical feature film Tove.
