Theme Day: Psychological Pressure and Moral Stress

Dorthe Birkmose | Moral Stress

Dorthe Birkmose enlightens us on the subject of moral stress as she dives deep into how moral stress is a healthy reaction to working conditions that prevent employees and managers from working in a professionally and morally responsible manner.

It does not feel healthy. Moral stress is felt as a guilty conscience, professional dissatisfaction, and a sense of meaninglessness. We try to eliminate this unpleasant feeling using methods we already know—such as cynicism, passive resignation, complaining, fleeing, “quiet quitting,” and shadow work—but these methods only exacerbate the problems. Organizational problems cannot be solved individually – they must be solved organizationally.

Rikke Høgsted | Psychological First Aid – Let the Community Heal

When we experience psychologically demanding incidents in the workplace, we don’t just react as individuals—we react as part of a community. What happens to us when we experience something serious? How does it affect us? And most importantly: What can we do together to move forward effectively?

Welcome to a presentation on how we move on from the past, when we used to ask “What is wrong with you?” to “What happened?”—and then toward the most crucial question: “Who is there for you?” We are not defined by what we are exposed to, but by how we handle the situation. Based on her latest book, Rikke explains the “Elevator Concept”—a concept describing how the thoughtless use of professional crisis intervention can lead to the medicalization of natural reactions and the weakening of the workplace community.
