Tórshavn Big Band at Sjónleikarhúsið

When Tórshavnar Big Band takes the stage at Sjónleikarhúsið, it will also reconnect with an important chapter in Tórshavn’s musical history.

Sjónleikarhúsið was inaugurated in 1926, and that same year the jazz band Goggan made the venue its regular home. Goggan continued performing there until the mid-1970s, making the theatre a significant part of the early history of Faroese jazz.

Jazz had already gained a foothold in the Faroe Islands by then. As early as 1923, Jazzband Triumph was founded, and over the following decades a vibrant jazz and dance music scene developed in Tórshavn.

In 1972, while Goggan was still performing at Sjónleikarhúsið, Brandur Øssursson founded Tórshavnar Stórband. The orchestra has since continued under various names and is today known as Tórshavnar Big Band.

Now these histories come together once again.

Tórshavnar Big Band returns to Sjónleikarhúsið with 17 musicians and the grand, classic big band sound.
