Upphav
“On the first of April 1919, three boats went out to sea: two seksmannafør (six-man boats) and one fýramannafar (four-man boat) with four men. … When it had turned to dusk and no boat had returned, there was no doubt that a disaster had occurred…” — Excerpt from ‘Hest søgu’ (The History of Hestur) by Jóan Chr. Poulsen (1947)
UPPHAV (Origin) is about daily life, the conditions, and the circumstances of families in Hestur—as well as across all of the Faroe Islands—during this period. The play is unique because it is not only the story of the men who drowned, but also of the women and children who were left behind in a society without any public or private social security.
