You Gaze On Me – As I Gaze Upon You

Where: Dansistovan, Skálin

The exhibition opens on Saturday, June 21, at 3 PM. Everyone is welcome.

The Greenlandic contemporary artist Ivínguak Stork Høegh engages in dialogue with older works by Christine Deichmann, Oda Isbrand, Ellen Locher Thalbitzer, and Jette Bang, who visited Greenland before 1940.

In a series of works titled Arctic Exotic, Ivínguak Stork Høegh plays with stereotypical ideas of the Arctic while creating new narratives.

Christine Deichmann (1869–1945), Oda Isbrand (1904–1987), Ellen Locher Thalbitzer (1883–1956), and Jette Bang (1914–1964) have been written out of Danish art history as female artists. Unlike their male colleagues, they did not depict grand landscapes or Inuit in national costumes, but chose subjects such as women and children, women and children who are not just observed, but who also meet and return the gaze.

In a dialogue between contemporary art and historical works, the exhibition explores the colonial gaze on Greenland and what happens when that gaze is confronted, mirrored, and renegotiated.

The exhibition is curated by Laila Lund Altinbas and Stine Lundberg Hansen.
