Hare-hunting in the Faroe Islands

Hare-hunting season

The hare has been part of the Faroese nature since 1855 when it was imported from Norway. The population quickly grew and now the hare is a common sight around the islands.

In connection with the hares arrival there was also established a hare-hunting season ranging from November 2nd to December 31st. The hunting is allowed everyday except Sunday.

Why is this info important to know when planning a trip to the Faroe Islands? Because it impacts ones ability to hike in the Faroese mountains.

Keeping your safety in mind, we strongly discourage anyone going hiking in the mountains in the hunting season, without consulting the landowner, and ask that you preferably go on Sundays when there are no ongoing hunts.

You can always contact the local tourist information center to hear more about the local hare-hunts.

Hikes that can be enjoyed year-round on the Island of Streymoy:

Saksun:

  • Út á Lógv at Saksun – Be mindful of the high and low tides; contact Visit Tórshavn for guidance.

Tórshavn:

  • From the water dam in Havnardalur, follow the Sandá stream towards Sandágerð.
  • Starting at Visit Tórshavn, walk through the city park, pass the Black Waterfall (Svartafoss), continue through Hoydalar and Boðanesgjógv, and end in Gomlu Hoyvík.

Nólsoy:

  • During hunting season, residents of Nólsoy hunt on the same Saturday, making other days ideal for hiking. If you’d like to hike on a Saturday, contact René Hansen at +298 28 48 11 for advice.
