Tjaldurs Apotek

Pharmacy in Tórshavn

There are two pharmacies in Tórshavn: Tjaldurs Apotek and Apotekið Steinatún.

If you require prescription only medicine (POM) urgently, you need to contact a local Faroese general practitioner (GP), and have him/her write you a prescription on the medicine. You can dial 1870 after 4pm to contact the GP who is on call at Landssjúkrahúsið in Tórshavn. If you require urgent POM medicine between 8am and 4pm, you need to contact a local GP in the area, where you are staying. If you are staying at a hotel, please inquire at the reception desk of the hotel, and they will be able to help you out with an phone number and address to a local GP.

If you require a specific medicine, which you have obtained in your home country, bear in mind that brand names of medicines differ among countries. The GP may not be familiar with the brand name of your medicine. If you know the generic name of the drug (e.g. glyceryl trinitrate), it will make it easier for the GP to find a corresponding medicine that is available in the Faroes.

Over the counter (OTC) medicines can be purchased from pharmacies and pharmacy outlets. The selection of OTC medicines is more restricted in the Faroes than in the UK and in the US. Ask for the generic name of the medicine, e.g. paracetamol instead of Tylenol®. The pharmacy staff are always happy to be of assistance with regard to medicine-related questions.

You can call the switchboard at Tjaldurs Pharmacy in Tórshavn at +298 34 11 00 between 9am and 5pm Mon-Fri, and they can direct your medicine-related query to a pharmacist.
