Storm Petrels in Nólsoy
Storm Petrels
The Storm Petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus) is a small black seabird that spends nearly its entire life at sea and only comes ashore during the breeding season.
One of the largest colonies of Storm Petrels in the world is located in Nólsoy, with an estimated 100,000 pairs. The Storm Petrel breeds in various locations throughout the Faroe Islands, but primarily in Urðin in Nólsoy. Some estimates suggest that nowhere else in the world are there as many Storm Petrels as in this area.
The Storm Petrel is highly nocturnal, which helps it find food and return to its nest at night. People from all over the world visit Nólsoy to experience these birds, which are only visible at night.
In Faroese, this bird is known as Drunnhvíti.
