Tórshavn Music School

The music school system was established as a pilot project in 1981. Three years later, in 1984, the law was passed and put into effect. At the same time, Tórshavn Music School was established as an institution within Tórshavn Municipality.

A degree from a conservatory of music or other higher education in music is required to teach in the music school system.

The state and municipality each pay half of the teachers’ salaries, and Tórshavn Municipality provides an additional contribution to the school’s activities.

Tórshavn Music School is located at Landavegur 84.

Currently, the school employs more than 50 teachers, and about 800 students receive instruction on an instrument each week. Instruction includes instrument playing, larger and smaller ensembles, and theoretical subjects (theory, ear training, history, etc.).

In addition to teaching at the music school, Tórshavn Music School collaborates with other cultural institutions, including Skúlan á Fløtum on the Litir í Leiki program and Skúlan við Løgmannabreyt on the Ljóð í Leiki program.

Tórshavn Music School also collaborates with Glasir and Setrið on music education.
