Tips for Planning Your Visit

Weather

The weather can be unpredictable, so pack layers and waterproof clothing.

Transportation

Renting a car is the best way to explore, but public transportation is also available.

Currency

The local currency is the Danish krone (DKK), though most credit cards are accepted practically everywhere. Press here for DKK converter. NB!: American Express is not accepted in the Faroe Islands, as is the case with most of Europe.

Tax Free

All non-residents of the Faroe Islands are exempt from the 25% value-added tax, VAT, (minus a service charge), on purchases over DKK 300, subject to the conditions of regulations.

When shopping look, for the “Tax-Free” signs in shop windows, which are located in over 200 shops across the Faroe Islands.

Language

English is commonly spoken, but learning a few Faroese phrases can be helpful.

Accommodations

Book accommodations in advance, especially during peak seasons.

Dining

The city offers a wide array of dining options, offering everything between fine dining to home dining. Be prepared for higher costs.

Safety

The islands are very safe, but travel insurance is recommended. Citizens of the Nordic countries and Great Britain are covered under their respective public health plans whilt in the Faroe Islands. Residents of other countries need to acquire their own traveller´s health insurance before arriving in the islands.

Activities

Enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, but respect the natural environment and follow safety guidelines.

Excursions/Events

We recommend bringing a smartphone or tablet, as many excursions and events require online booking and provide important details digitally.

Hare Hunting Season: November 2nd-December 31st

Hare hunting season lasts from November 2nd to December 31st. During this time, we strongly discourage anyone going hiking in the mountains in the hunting season, without consulting the landowner, and ask that you preferably go on Sundays when there are no ongoing hunts. Read more here.

Accessibility

Exploring Tórshavn with limited mobility offers unique opportunities, as more places enhance accessibility for wheelchair users and others with mobility challenges. The number of accessible locations is steadily growing.

City buses are equipped with designated seating areas, and while regional buses currently do not offer this feature, there are ongoing efforts to improve accessibility.
