Take a walk in the old Cemetery in Tórshavn, among founders of the modern capital of Tórshavn, both ordinary and the extraordinary.
Priest Rasmus Jørgen Winther, initiated the establishment of a new cemetery “á Svínaryggi” in 1781, due to the lack of space at Tinganes cemetery. The cemetery “á Svínaryggi” was consecrated on Ascension Day in 1782, and Rasmus Jørgen Winther himself was later buried here.
Today, the cemetery is a beautiful park located in the heart of Tórshavn. With a few exceptions, it has not been in use since 1935, and nearly 3,000 people are buried here.
