Huldulitt 2026
Huldulitt in Tórshavn, 31st of January to 8th of February, emphasizes the unique Faroese history and cultural heritage through various light installations and events, thereby strengthening the Faroese identity and art – and, for our visitors, strengthening the understanding of Faroese heritage and culture
It is a time when we say ‘síggjast’ (see you later) with the huldufolk, trolls, and elves, before they retreat into hiding, as we gradually approach brighter times
Huldulitt
“‘With Huldulitt, the aim is to shed light on our folklore and cultural heritage, namely the stories and legends about hidden people, elves, and trolls. Stories that many children today do not know or only know in a Disney version,’ says Tordis á Rógvi Biskopstø, director of Visit Tórshavn. ‘This time of year can be very dark and heavy, so it’s fitting to have an event that makes the season a bit magical by traveling into the hidden world, where we simultaneously look forward to brighter times and say goodbye to these beings that only thrive in darkness,’ Tordis adds.
This will, among other things, be achieved by transforming Viðarlundin into an enchanting hidden grove with light installations, various intriguing objects, and a hidden portal. In addition, it will be adorned with works created by institutions and schools in the municipality.
The city center in Tórshavn will also be decorated with light installations, including a hidden tunnel on Vaglið and a special wall decoration in Steinatún featuring creatures by William Heinesen. ‘William Heinesen is also known for creating and drawing trolls and other beings inspired by the hidden world, and the statue Tarira in Viðarlundin is an example of that — and now these beings will come to life through an animated wall decoration,’ Tordis explains.
Thus, legends, art, events, and sounds are connected through the Huldulitt initiative.
The opening will take place on January 31st, and on that day, several locations and shops in Tórshavn will add a special touch, and interesting events and concerts will also be on the program both on the opening day and throughout the week.
So, be sure to check out the diverse schedule, which will soon be revealed
