Kongaminnið Monument
The Kongaminnið monument is a basalt obelisk erected in 1882 to commemorate the visit of Danish King Christian IX to the Faroe Islands in 1874, marking the first visit by a Danish monarch. From this vantage point, you have a splendid view of the town.
The king’s visit to Tórshavn had its dramatic moments. Tragically, Tórshavn’s mayor fainted during the welcome speech and died on the spot in front of the King and the crowd. It is said that King Christian IX was greatly affected by this event and supported the mayor’s widow financially for the rest of her life.
