What to do on a snowy day
A local’s guide to Tórshavn’s winter magic.
February 18th, 2026
There is a specific kind of silence that falls over Tórshavn when the first snowflakes start to settle. The rhythmic pitter-patter of the rain is replaced by a muffled, sparkling stillness that turns our capital into something straight out of a storybook.
Even though our city is small, you are sure to find something to do in the snow. Hop on the red city buses and visit the charming villages around the municipality – it’s sure to be gorgeous. Just be sure to check driving conditions before heading out of the city, as the weather can change quickly.
Tórshavn is filled with hidden gems tucked around every corner. The contrast of the black-tarred houses á Reyni against the bright white snow is a photographer’s dream – just watch your step on the historic stones, as they can get quite slippery!
There is nothing quite like the crisp air of a winter walk to clear the mind. Or, if you prefer to stay cozy, why not find an interesting event to attend? There is often a concert or a local gathering that feels even more intimate when the world outside is covered in white.

Seeking the Warmth
If the cold weather outside is not your cup of hot cocoa, consider a trip to one of our museums or a relaxing dip in a warm pool.
Keep in mind that winter days here are short but sweet. The ‘blue hour’—that magical twilight between 10:00 and 15:00—offers the best light for photos before the city lights take over the evening.
The Cultural Sanctuary: Duck into the National Museum or the Art Gallery to brush up on Faroese history and culture. It’s the perfect way to spend a few hours while the wind whistles outside.
Enjoy the Water: Don’t worry, we are not expecting you to do a polar plunge! Instead, enjoy the day at the local swimming pool, Svimjihøllin, where they just expanded with a brand new wellness area. Alternatively, visit the Ress Spa at Hotel Føroyar, which has multiple saunas and pools designed for ultimate relaxation.
The “Hugni” Hubs
Snowy days were made for the H.N.J. Bookstore at Vaglið square. Known locally as “the old bookstore,” it is a historic refuge from the winter wind. Settle down in one of the many nearby cafés with a freshly brewed coffee or a rich hot chocolate. Somehow, watching the world turn white through a steamy windowpane makes the story you’re reading even better.

Winter Walks & Safe Trails
While the high mountain peaks can be treacherous when the snow falls, Tórshavn is surrounded by beautiful, low-level trails that are much safer for a winter wander.
These “urban hikes” allow you to experience the crisp Faroese nature while keeping the city lights well within sight.
Even on these lower paths, it is important to wear proper layers and sturdy boots with a good grip for the snow. It’s always a good habit to check yr.no or Windy.com before venturing out for a winter walk.
Enjoying the snow with kids

Wanna go sledding? In Tórshavn, we have two well-known hills that come alive as soon as the snow sticks. There is the popular slope by the KFUK-House and the hill across from the SMS shopping centre. Both are local favorites and are sure to provide hours of entertainment.
If the snowy air gets a bit too chilly, a trip to the public library, Býarbókasavnið, is the perfect solution. It’s a warm haven for families, and there is even an indoor playground where the little ones can burn off that last bit of “snow energy” while you enjoy a quiet moment.
