On the inner pier stands the Gate of Honour.
On September 5, 1895, Føroyingatíðindi wrote that a large whale had been spotted near Nólsoy, measuring around 25 meters in length.
The people of Nólsoy claimed the whale after a tough struggle with Albert Grøn from the whaling station in Gjánoyri and the governor, Buckwald.
The whale’s vertebrae were used as stools in the village, and its jaw was set up as an honorary gate by the wooden bridge when King Frederik VII visited in 1907. In 1975, it was re-erected in Hoygarðurin, where it still stands today.
