Culture Night in Tórshavn
In the Faroe Islands, we celebrate Culture Night, a vibrant annual event that goes beyond traditional museum visits.
It’s a day when our community opens its doors wide to showcase what makes our town thrive.
From businesses revealing their inner workings to the hospital offering insights into healthcare, and even the courthouse granting rare glimpses into the legal world, there’s something for everyone.
Tórshavn’s museums, galleries, and exhibitions also join in with special presentations. Best of all, it’s free!

Ólavsøka
Ólavsøka, the Faroese National Day, celebrated annually on July 28th and 29th, commemorates King Olaf II of Norway’s death at the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030. Known as Saint Olaf, he played a key role in spreading Christianity in the Nordic countries, including the Faroe Islands.
This nearly thousand-year-old tradition is deeply rooted in Faroese culture, marked by parliamentary meetings and church services in Tórshavn since the 1600s.
Today, Ólavsøka features cultural events like the Faroese Chain Dance, art exhibitions, concerts, and rowing competitions.
There is also a foot race, the Ólavsøka run, an event integral to the Ólavsøka celebrations which is hosted by Bragdið, a local running organisation. The race course, located at Skálatrøð, offers flat terrain perfect for running and ample opportunities for spectators to enjoy the event.
Participants of all ages and skill levels join from various regions, with the adult race covering a 5-kilometer distance. The children’s races, ranging from 430 meters to 1.3 kilometers, start at 6:00 PM. This is followed by the adult race at 6:30 PM or once the children’s race concludes. Medals for the children are distributed immediately to avoid long waits.
For many, this race signifies the start of Ólavsøka and the Bragdið team eagerly anticipates this event each year.
